While you might come to Kos for its beautiful beaches, the Zia sunset, or visiting nearby islands, your trip wouldn’t be complete without exploring the island’s wineries. As driving after wine tasting is not recommended, here is our Kos Wineries Guide, with tips on reaching each by public transport.

Hatziemmanouil Winery

Located near Tigaki, Hatziemmanouil is a family-run winery dating back to the early 20th century, with a modern facility opened in 2004. The family is now in its fourth generation.

Visitors may be able to explore the facilities independently, including the cellar, modern installations, and old instruments displayed by the vines. Tastings take place on their sunny terrace, with different packages available. More info on their website.

How to get there by public transport: approximately 4km from Kos Town. Take a KTEL bus towards Zipari (most routes pass through; confirm at the bus terminal) and walk the final stretch. Ask the driver if they can drop you closer. For your return, walk back to the main road and wave down a passing bus.

Tip: Hatziemmanouil and Ktima Akrani wineries are only 850 meters apart (15-minute walk) – visit both together.

Hatzinikolaou Winery

Founded in 2013 by Greek–Australian Tony Stevens (Anthony Hatzinikolaou), this family winery revived the near-extinct Mavrothyliko (“Black Lady”) grape, believed enjoyed by Hippocrates. Though Tony passed away in 2013, his family continues his vision.

Their flagship is the Dry Red “Black Lady.” Tours & tastings: Contact ahead as no formal tours are scheduled, but laid-back tastings are usually available. Contacts details available on their website.

How to get there by public transport: Located just before Zipari. Take a bus to Zipari’s first stop and walk back slightly. No sidewalks, but the road is wide enough unless you have mobility concerns. Taxi from Kos Town costs ~€20 (confirm with driver).

Tip: Have lunch in Zipari (we suggest Το Πάρκο των Γεύσεων). On the way to the winery, you can also consider visiting Kos Olive Oil Factory – Papadimitriou.

Ktima Akrani Winery

Ktima Akrani is one of Kos’ flagship wineries, rebranded to “Akrani” meaning “close friend” in local dialect, reflecting their focus on hospitality and authentic winemaking.

They produce premium small-batch wines from indigenous varieties like Assyrtiko and Athiri, plus international grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Their Assyrtiko is praised for mineral freshness, while reds are rich and structured. More info on their website.

How to get there by public transport: approximately 4km from Kos Town. Take a KTEL bus towards Zipari, walk the final stretch. Ask the driver if they can stop closer. Return the same way.

Tip: Combine with Hatziemmanouil Winery (15 min walk).

Petra Marianou

Founded in 2015 by the Marinos family from Pyli, Petra Marianou is a certified-organic winery focusing on environmentally respectful viticulture combining tradition and modern methods. Visit their website for wines and tasting options.

How to get there by public transport: approximately 12km from Kos Town. Take a KTEL bus towards Zipari and ask the driver about Petra Marianou (show them on a map). Return by waiting at a safe spot to wave down a bus.

Skevofilax Winery

Family-owned since 2010 in Kefalos, Skevofilax expanded from 20 to 40 acres. After a major renovation and energy upgrade in May 2024, it offers a modern wine experience.

They produce whites (Assyrtiko, Malagouzia) and reds/rosés (Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon). Award-winning wines include Karydies White, Sweet Sunset Red, and Tethalassomenos.

Tasting packages including local cheese and charcuterie are available, or order by glass. Booking can be done online.

How to get there by public transport: take the bus to Kefalos, alight at Kefalos Beach (ask driver), then walk 1.5km (20 minutes), rent a bike, or take a taxi. Not doable as a day trip by bus – consider staying overnight in Kefalos and visiting Volcanic Winery too.

Volcania Winery

Founded in 1980 near Kefalos, Volcania produces wines with distinctive volcanic minerality. More info on their website.

How to get there by public transport: Take a bus from Kos Town to Kefalos and ask the driver to drop you near the winery (main road ~800m away). Mention Lagada Beach as a landmark. Return buses are limited; plan ahead or consider staying overnight in Kefalos and visiting Skevofilax Winery too.
